6th - 8th Grades

Covid Update for the 2020/2021 School Year

Wednesday Middle School - Grades 6-8: (Kristin Rupprecht: krupprecht@stmargaret.org)

Virtual Class Option:
We will have a completely virtual year. Last year, we introduced cyber classes to our calendar for our middle school students in the hopes that fewer in-person meeting times would better accommodate the busy schedules of our families. This year, we will follow a similar pattern of real-time (but now virtual) classes with catechists and asynchronous cyber classes which will be self-directed (same as last year).

We will be using Google Classrooms for our online content and Zoom for our virtual meeting times. Each student will be required to have a Gmail account to log into the classroom. After you register for Faith Formation, I’ll send an email asking for a Gmail address in order to set up the classrooms ahead of time.

For our real-time classes, we will gather on Zoom, on designated Wednesdays, 7:00pm-8:00pm, pray together as a large group, and then we will send students to break-out rooms for class with their teachers. For our asynchronous cyber classes, each lesson will be available at the beginning of the week, and students will have until the following week to complete the lesson.

For all Zoom gatherings, students will be required to have their cameras turned on and may not use virtual backgrounds.

6th graders will receive a textbook and Bible to be picked up by a parent in September. 7th and 8th graders will use the same textbook as last year. Parents of 7th and 8th-grade students who are new to our program may pick up a textbook and Bible in September.

Home Study Option:
Because we will be completely virtual, home study students may join our regular virtual class option. Families who are not able to participate in the virtual program have the option of working through the text independently and completing the paper quizzes as in the past. These materials will be available for pick up in September. There will be two times during the year that we will gather as a large group (see calendar) - parents and students together. Whether this will be virtual or in-person will be decided at a later date.
6th graders will receive a textbook and Bible to be picked up by a parent in September. 7th and 8th graders will use the same textbook as last year. Parents of 7th and 8th-grade students who are new to our program may pick up a textbook and Bible in September.

REMINDER FOR INCOMING 8th GRADE PARENTS:
If you intend for your son or daughter to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation in 9th grade, enrollment in 8th grade faith formation is required.

Middle School Faith Formation (Grades 6-8) OPTIONS:

Middle School Sessions (Wednesdays): Classes meet Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:15 pm in the Middle School building (St. Mary Magdalen Mission Campus).

  • Our Wednesday program offers a youth ministry program where young people explore their faith through various methods that support younger adolescence faith development. Activates include both large and small group catechetical sessions, cyber classes, social nights, grade-level mini-retreats, service projects and large group gatherings with parents.
  • Large Group Gatherings with parents take place three times throughout the year on Sunday evening. These are opportunities for parents and younger teens to grow in faith together.

Middle School Home Study: This program provides materials and support to parents who choose to guide their youth through the faith formation process at home.

  • Large Group Gatherings with parents take place three times throughout the year on Sunday evening. These are opportunities for parents and younger teens to grow in faith together. Completed Chapter Quizzes are collected at the Large Group Gatherings.
  • Chapter Quizzes: The primary way in which we assess successful participation in Home Study Faith Formation is through the Chapter Quizzes. Unfortunately, this new book does not provide online quizzes at this time. We will be assessing the work “old school” by asking the students to complete the paper quizzes and turn them in at the Large Group Gatherings throughout the year.
